Cooking Tips When Out Camping

January 11th, 2017 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

Cooking Tips When Out CampingCooking Tips When Out Camping come in handy and make your trip much more enjoyable. While we were kids, my brother and I, had the opportunity of traveling around the countryside with our father. We were able to explore everything our home country had to offer. Unfortunately, in most of these trips our mother was left behind as she had to work. We were given the chance to spend time with our father. He was a nature lover and took us almost anywhere our car and feet could lead us.

These trips were our time together with our beloved father. While we were young did everything in his power to spend as much time with us as possible. If time was not the issue back then, we tried to keep the budget under logical limits. All these trips were made with our car that was carrying on its roof our specially designed and hand-made tender.

Cooking Tips When Out Camping

During those camping times and since our mother was not near by to feed us, our father was apart from the designated driver and the leader of our group, also the cook. He served us some of the best meals we have ever tasted. Probably because we were really hungry by the time it was time to eat. The truth is that I still remember the taste of his pasta. If I could go back in time, I would love to experience again the thrill of singing with my brother while our dad was cooking his amazing pasta on our carry on kitchen supplies.

Other campers tend to agree with my remark as they support that camping cooking can be some of the best cooking there is. Close to the environment and while being able to smell all that wonderful tasty food cooked on the fire, many agree that there is nothing better.

Cooking Tips When Out Camping

If you are a beginner in camping, you should know that there are several different methods that can be used when cooking while camping, like wood fires, camp charcoal, stoves, foil cooking and more. The type of cooking method is directly related to the food you will decide to make. How you like it cooked sometimes decides what method you should be using. But then again there are several camping cooking tips to consider before cooking and camping out.

Consider freezing the meat for instance. Freezing it ahead of time can keep the meat fresh and other foods cool as well. My father used to be proactive like that and plan ahead of time. He also used plastic bags or containers to keep measured portions of the food that was about to consumed, safely contained. I think it is also best if you want to avoid food from sticking to the pans to apply oil on the grill.

Finally, put matches somewhere safe to keep them dry. Many camping cookbook recipes require the use of natural fire. There is no better way to start a fire than with matches. You can also keep your drinks in a separate cooler from food. It can help keep foods colder longer avoiding any kind of spoilage. Finally, a great tip is to keep water bottles when they are empty. They can become great camping cooking containers to put the salad dressing, oils, or any other liquid substance.

Better Camping TripsTired of packing too much gear or not bringing critical camping gear for your camping trips? Camping trips can be a great way to relax and get away from it all. With a little planning you could have better better camping trips. Since different camping areas offer different challenges start off by making a camping list and/or hiking gear list you might need. This will help get you started…

Are there any wildlife problems that may be an issue on your trip? Bears, raccoons, snakes, spiders, and mosquitoes are just a handful of the typical wildlife to consider on your camp trips.

What weather is possible? Pack the right gear for the trip. Does the weather vary much? Do you need rain gear? Does the temperature fluctuate between extremes like it does in the desert or are biting insects a problem? If it’s a trip you haven’t taken before ask someone who has or call your guide or host.

What do you want to do? Are you taking a camping trip to relax or are you looking for full physical involvement? Do you want to camp only, or would you like to throw in some hiking, fishing, kayaking, rafting, or mountain biking into the mix?

Rustic?

Do you like rustic camping or do you think flush toilets and warm running water are a good thing? If you like traveling in RV comfort, are looking for tips, or if you need help selecting a campground, take a look at Your RV Lifestyle before your next camping trip.

Consider your level of fitness. Your level of fitness will determine how much you enjoy your trip. If you’re going to be doing demanding activities be honest with yourself and make sure you’re up to the challenge. Pushing yourself too far will only make you miserable.

Camping trips in remote locations may require different transportation than you’re used to… how are you going to get there. Is help easily available if you need it?

How To Have Better Camping Trips?

Do you need topographic maps because you’re wanting to get away into the back country?

If you’re hiring an outfitter ask what’s included and expected of you regarding the camping tours you’re considering. If you’re camping at various sites do you have to carry your own hiking gear or other equipment used for camping or will your host take care of it? Do they provide food or shelter?

Is the camping trip “kid appropriate”? Do they have guest references you can check with to make sure your trip is a good one? Do they carry insurance or do you need to get your own?

If you’re going on any remote camping trips make sure you plan for water. Will there be water available the entire time or will you need to treat or purify your own with a water filter or water purifier? Or will you have to carry it all…

Features To Look For In Portable Solar Power Systems

January 1st, 2017 ernie Posted in Backpacking | No Comments »

Portable Solar Power SystemsThere are lots of issues to think about when considering portable solar power systems. Some of the items are features include the following. How much does it weigh? If you will be carrying your equipment in a car, this may not be so much of an issue. But if you’re backpacking, it is! How much power does it supply? How long does it take to charge my equipment? Can it run my equipment, or only charge it?

Does it come with a back-up battery? Some companies sell back-up batteries to go with your solar cell. You can charge the battery during the day (or, in some cases, while you are traveling) and later use the battery to charge your equipment. These batteries can sometimes also be charged from a wall socket and/or from a car charge adapter.

Features To Look For In Portable Solar Power Systems

Can you operate it while you are traveling? You may want to have a solar cell that you can use while you are hiking or traveling (such as a flexible panel that can be carried
on your back, or one that is even built into your backpack). This way, you can charge your small equipment, or a backup battery, while you are on-the-move (I don’t think you would want to charge your laptop while you are hiking).

Is it waterproof? If you will be using your equipment in a boat or under other circumstances where it is likely to get wet in the jungle during a monsoon) this is an important factor to consider.

Is the cord long enough? Your solar cell does best in bright sunlight, but your other equipment usually doesn’t. Some solar cells come with a long cord so you can put your
camera or laptop in the shade while they are charging.

Mountain Hiking Tips, Mountain Trekking Gear & Equipment Hints

December 25th, 2016 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

Mountain Hiking TipsMountain hiking demands great gear and more education than your typical trail hike. Why? Because as you ascend breathing becomes less efficient, the trails can grow difficult, and rescue becomes more challenging. So consider your mountain equipment to be your life support system. We have included a few Mountain Hiking Tips in this post.

In day hiking you can get away with wearing light-weight boots or shoes. Remote mountain hiking requires heavier supportive boots to protect your ankles and feet. Walking with a sprained ankle on a day hike is inconvenient compared to trying to limp out of the back-country mountains. Don’t forget that heavy pack you have to carry. Thinking ahead and being prepared with the right mountain gear, guides, and information can make a huge difference. It can literally mean the difference between a minor mishap and at times death. Take your safety seriously.

As elevation increases the atmospheric pressure decreases (amount of oxygen doesn’t actually drop until over 50,000 feet). Which means there’s less pressure to ‘push’ the air into and fill your lungs. Because there is less air going into your lungs you’ll fatigue more quickly. How much does the pressure really change? According to an academic library.com article (that can be applied to mountain hiking) the barometric pressure can drop by 40% between sea level (average 760 millimeters of mercury) and 12,000 feet (483 millimeters of mercury). Obviously having 40% less oxygen available to your body (because of the pressure drop) will impact you.

Now if you had a 40% decrease in your ability to deliver oxygen to your body during an average day wouldn’t you be concerned? Add the fact you’re asking more of your body in terms of keeping you warm in a cooler/cold environment.

Mountain Hiking Tips, Mountain Trekking Gear & Equipment Hints

You are also losing water from your system, your reactions are slowed, and your not around the corner from the nearest hospital. Your mountain hiking equipment becomes a more important consideration.  the higher the altitude and the more remote your location the more important it becomes.

Depending on how cold the temperatures you might encounter, you’ll probably want some good insulated hiking boots. Depending on the altitude and temperature you may need mountaineering boots.  Hiking clothes, sleeping bags, camping tents, and other equipment used for hiking rated for lower temperature than what you think you’ll actually experience. This will give you an extra margin of safety. Also keep in mind that mildly uncomfortable mountain hiking gear will become a bigger problem…

Burn more Calories by Fidgeting

December 21st, 2016 ernie Posted in Exercise | No Comments »

Burn more Calories by FidgetingYou can burn more calories by fidgeting. the actual number varies a great deal depending on the person. Estimates by experts put it at 300 to 400 calories a day for the average person who fidgets a lot. When you think about it, this is an easy way to burn off calories. Some people do this naturally. They are the type of person who really cannot sit still and have to be doing something all of the time. You know who they are. They are constantly moving. They are waving their hands, moving their feet while sitting, and constantly getting up and down from their seat. Donald Trump has a lot of energy and never stops. He probably burns a great deal more than 400 calories with his schedule.

Burn more Calories by Fidgeting

Using the couch potato as a base, burning more calories should be easy. Someone who is always on the couch, not moving, watching TV, and snacking will burn fewer calories. Getting up often, moving around the house, standing while working, etc is a good start to burning those calories.

Just become more active. Use an app on your smartphone to send an alarm every 15 or 30 minutes to remind you to get moving. These apps are great and sometimes annoying. But they do the job of reminding you to get moving. They are helpful if you are not a normally fidgety person.

Look around you. Watch the people who are slim. Are they more active? Are they the fidgety types? Some will be naturally athletic, however many will just be active and this really helps to burn the calories. Now is the time to start. Get up from your desk or couch and start walking. Carry your smartphone with you if needed, but get moving and make it a habit.

Camping – The Ultimate Budget Vacation

December 18th, 2016 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

Enjoying a vacation on a limited budget. It is difficult to beat the appeal of the good old camping trip. It is the Ultimate Budget Vacation. After all, it costs next to nothing to pitch your tent in the back country wilderness of your favorite state or national park. A week long camping trip can often cost less than a day or two in a big city or tourist hot spot, while giving the entire family time to bond and enjoy being together.

As a matter of fact, camping is one of the most popular family activities, and many families enjoy camping together, sharing stories around a roaring fire, roasting marshmallows, swimming, fishing and all the other great things that come with a camping trip.

For many, camping brings back memories from childhood, and many parents want to give their children a taste of what their own childhood was like, back when things were so much simpler.

Another great thing about camping is that once the initial expenses are paid, there is little in the way of ongoing expenses. Unlike a traditional vacation, in which the money you spend on that great hotel is gone for good, with camping you buy your hotel room (also known as your tent) outright, and you own it forever.

Buy All of the Essentials

After you have bought all the essential items, like the tent, a couple of good camping lanterns, a good camp stove, sleeping bags and the like, your only expenses may be the food for the trip and the gas it takes to get there.

And camping provides plenty for all members of the family to do. Dad may enjoy fishing in his favorite spot, or boating around the lake, while mom and the kids may enjoy a beautiful hike and bird watching trip. There are even campgrounds that feature movies, swimming pools and other amenities for those who prefer a level of comfort to their journey.

As a matter of fact, there are many ways to camp. From rough camping in the back country to cabins at campgrounds to even RV camping. The level is entirely up to you, and that is one thing that makes camping so attractive to budget travelers and families alike.

Camping – The Ultimate Budget Vacation

There is nothing quite like vacationing in the great outdoors to get back in touch with nature. From watching the wildlife to watching the stars, there is plenty to do on the average camping trip. Stargazing is particularly popular with city dwellers, who may never have seen the Milky Way in all its glory before. Getting away from the glare of city lights and see nature as it truly is.

We know that camping is one of the least expensive of all vacations. But lets take a quick look at the expenses associated with this type of budget travel. The centerpiece of the camping trip, of course, is the tent. Unless you plan to camp in an RV or rent a cabin, which is more expensive, you will need a sturdy, high quality tent. It is important that the tent be waterproof and that it close easily. Be sure the tent features a high quality zipper or other closure. It should be easy for every member of the family to operate. Test the zipper several times, and be sure you know how to set up the tent before you get to the woods.

High Quality Sleeping Bags

Most campers will also want to invest in a few high quality sleeping bags. It is a good idea to choose a sleeping bag that is insulated. Pick one that will be good for several seasons. Many sleeping bags are designed with removable liners and insulation. These are a good choice, since they can be used in cold weather and warm.

It is also a good idea to buy a couple of camp lanterns. These portable lights are great for lighting your way around in the dark. A cooler for drinks and food is a good idea as well. As is a portable charcoal grill or camp stove. Are camping at a campground. You may be able to leave the camp stove and grill at home. Since many campgrounds provide grills for their guests to use free of charge. It is important to find out what amenities each campground offers before you head out.

Maine WhitewaterMaine white water rafting trips run seven days a week. From mid-April through mid-October from various locations. Maine features world class Class III-IV whitewater on the Kennebec River and Dead River. For example the Kennebec River has famous rapids such as “Magic Falls” and the “Three Sisters”. Which will thrill even the most experienced white water enthusiasts.

The Dead River offers some of the most exciting white water in the East. High water Class III-V dam releases and intermediate Class III dam releases in the summer for a great Dead River family rafting vacation. Whitewater rafting bases are located at The Forks, Maine located on the Kennebec River. For instance they offer the most convenient location for a Maine whitewater vacation.

Maine Rafting Whitewater

Rafting on the Penobscot River is one of the most spectacular and challenging river experiences in the Eastern U.S. The Penobscot River enjoys a reputation as a river of contrasts as it alternates between exhilarating rapids and breathtaking scenery. Rapids on the Penobscot River are short with sheer drops plunging into calm pools.

On the lower river are class I to III rapids, stop at a natural rock,. While the upper river is the most turbulent, dropping over 70 feet per mile through a narrow, granite walled canyon into the Exterminator and Staircase rapids, both advanced Class V rapids.

The Kennebec River, located in the heart of Maine’s whitewater country with 12 miles of fast and deep water flows daily, is our most popular rafting trip. The upper Kennebec gorge is where you’ll ride the thrilling roller coaster waves of Big Mama and the Three Sisters then plunge into boiling Magic Falls. Paddle your way down the lower river on sit-on-top kayaks to look for wildlife. The Kennebec is ideal for families and first time rafters. Waves crest from 4 to 8 feet high!.

The Dead River has the longest most continuous stretch of white water in New England. Big whitewater is released only 10 times a year, and this is the Maine river no serious rafter should miss! This 16-mile run is a wild and woolly, boulder-strewn whitewater bonanza. The Dead River comes alive when spring run-off causes flooding. Also in the fall when the lakes are drawn down to get ready for winter. Big water, spectacular fall foliage, and guaranteed fun!

Gear Up For Your Next Outdoor Experience – Camping

December 11th, 2016 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

Gear Up For Your Next Outdoor ExperienceCamping offers an easy and affordable escape from the rat race of everyday city life. An escape from people, cars, electronics, work, responsibilities, etc. However, camping today is nothing like the camping your grandfather did when he was young. The collection of outdoor camping equipment you can buy today gives a whole new meaning to the term “roughing it”. You need to Gear Up For Your Next Outdoor Experience to ensure everyone has a great time.

There are new camping items pouring into shops every season. They allow individuals and families the convenience and efficiency of almost feeling as if they are still at home. Of course, minus the lengthy list above. Almost any type of equipment you can think of some manufacturer has already created. All of the camping items you will ever need can be found in catalogs, camping outlets and online.

You will find more stuff than you thought ever existed. In fact, you may find that you never thought you would need some items until you come across them while shopping. A word of caution though. Use your common sense when shopping. It is easy to go overboard and buy items you don’t need and will never use. When you gear up for your next outdoor experience, it can be an expensive proposition unless your careful.

The type of equipment needed for camping varies from one individual or family to the next, but in general, you will find that the first thing you need is a tent; though some choose to forgo this method and seek the extreme extravagance of a pop-up camper or recreational vehicle. The majority though, prefer to keep it simple and a little more wild and earthy.

Gear Up For Your Next Outdoor Experience – Camping

Nothing lets you commune with nature better than taking technology out of the equation. You will also need items such as a cooking stove, sleeping bags, ice chest, and you may even consider a nice air mattress. Camping should be about simplicity, but not at the expense of your back and a good nights sleep.

In addition to the normal camping necessities you will need, you’ll also want to consider what activities you plan on doing while on your outdoor adventure. If you intend to hike, bike, backpack, kayak, climb or fish, then make sure you get everything you need in order to have a good time doing them. Any sports recreation store should easily be able to outfit you and prepare you for your outdoor expedition.

By being well prepared you will be better able to relax and enjoy yourself, rather than struggling with old antiquated camping gear. Make sure you update any old camping equipment in addition to buying any extra items. Some stores are great places to do this, and even allow you to shop online. So what are you waiting for? Gather up the pets and the rest of the family, get stocked up on the gear you need (and don’t forget the S’mores) and get out of the city. Go be one with nature—go camping!

Rafting Virginia West whitewater

The Gauley River also in West Virginia offers whitewater rafting today. It has drawn men and women to its banks for more than 200 years. It is enshrined in congressional legislation as a National Recreation Area.
For history lovers, the Gauley story mirrors the story of the United States. The tale of the Gauley River begins with the first West Virginia settlers in the 1770s. These pioneering European settlers braved the challenging terrain. There was the often-challenging relations with Native American residents who came before them. Chapters followed on the Civil War, industrialization that came with timber, mining and railroads. Subsequently the great civil works projects of the 1960s saw construction of the Summersville Dam near the Gauley’s headwaters, a marvel of engineering to behold.

World-class rafting and kayaking trips wind their way through the Gauley’s three sections. The Upper, Middle and Lower, each offering alternative difficulty levels and scenery. River outfitters offer trips from Spring to Fall, depending on local precipitation and water released by the Army Corps of Engineers from the Summersville Dam.

Water Releases

The boating culminates with the official “Gauley Season,” a 22-day schedule of releases for whitewater enthusiasts in September and October. The Gauley attracts more than 60,000 paddlers each year with world-famous rapids such as “Insignificant,” “Pillow Rock” and “Sweet’s Falls.”

Alongside the river, hikers, anglers and hunters enjoy the lush forest. The Monongahela National Forest is known for abundant wild life. The area is home to many rare and threatened plants, such as Virginia spiraea.

Wildlife watchers can find deer and even bear along the 26-mile corridor that stretches from the Summersville Dam to the Gauley’s confluence with the Kanawha River. Other animals that make their home in the area include 10 threatened species of mammals, birds, insects, fish and amphibians.

Backpacking Must Haves

December 1st, 2016 ernie Posted in Backpacking | No Comments »

A little forethought and organization will payoff in a great memorable adventure for your next outdoors excursion. There are some backpacking must haves that campers and back packers should really consider. When you go camping you will need a camping lantern , camping stove and a camping cot as well as a flash light.

Then you have the glorious Sunset and after that why not get together with your neighboring campers for a story telling session and sing-song round the campfire. If you thought a Camping Vacation would be ‘roughing it’ and ‘hard work’ then think again. Yes it will take some planning but that’s half the fun and it won’t be that much work. Most campsite have a fire pit with a steel grill to set the pots on. If there is a campfire ban in place you can use a portable barbecue. Take the utensils from the kitchen if you have bbq tools take them.

Be Ready for Severe Weather

Severe weather can occur anytime of year and often with little warning. According to NOAA, lightning is one of the most underrated severe weather hazards. It usually claims one or two victims at a time and does not cause mass destruction.

Horseback riding might be a fun and exciting option while visiting a national park. Several parks offer gravel roads for horseback riding, certain parks also have horse rentals and guided excursions available. A large van called an RV in employed by many campers, or more commonly in the UK a caravan is attached to a car. Both of these serve as basic mobile homes, with beds, gas and sometimes electricity.

So, if you haven’t experienced one of life treats, try it. You will enjoy yourself more than you might think. Go with the right people though.Had it with the “rat race”? Got time off but not much cash to spend? Losing touch with your family? Sounds like an old-fashioned camp out is just what you need.

Backpacking Must Haves

The cheap thrill from a backpacking adventure could really become one awesome experience. However, no one would like to encounter too unmanageable situations such as those of “Hostel”, that horrifying human trafficking movie, right?

No, there’s remedy for stupidity and overly trusting habits such as those boys in the movie. But a little common sense and carrying the right gear and other backpacking “must haves” should be of really great help if you would like to avoid any extreme conditions. So here are the perfect backpacking ingredients:

Lightweight Sleeping Mat

Maybe you’d say that it’s not your idea of a great adventure to take anything that resembles anything as cozy as your home. But after finding out just how many germs and bed bugs inhabit those local hotels and motels you’re planning to stay in, you will thank yourself so much for taking your own sleeping mat.

Portable Condiments

It really is a money-saving technique to keep your extra packets of mustard, ketchup, chili sauces and just about any condiment that fast food restaurants give when you order take out food or even when you dine-in. When you have not enough resources or when you forget to bring some of the ingredients that make your food more edible, these small packets of condiments can be handy. You don’t want shards of bottles cutting your skin or gooey ketchup messing up your other backpack stuff, right?

Whether you have a tight budget or believe sky’s the limit, you will find many camping supplies that range from as little as $20.00 all the way up to the hundreds.

Outdoor Activities

Camping mixed with outdoor activity is a great way to get ourselves involved with nature. National Parks can provide an excellent backdrop for some of your outdoor activities. Therefore in order to make sure that you have a pleasant camping adventure, make sure that you are fully clothed against all odds.

Place at least two in the bottom of you ice box then place the frozen meats, milk, juice into the box. You should place vegetables on top if there is room place a third frozen milk jug at the top of the box.

The next time you are planning on a great camping experience, don’t let the hassle of choosing a campsite get you down. Visit one of these great websites. With the thousands of campgrounds from which to choose, there is bound to be a place that is perfect for you and your family.

The thought of camping alone can be very intimidating, especially if you’re a woman. Ideally, it is not something recommended to women new to camping. If you are using a gas lantern in the rain you have to be careful because the glass globe can break if a lot of water gets on it. A single mantle in a lantern gives off about 300 watts of light.

Backpacking Must Haves

Both sports demand having the proper equipment and knowledge for safety reasons. Many National Parks offer established climbing routes that will have a wide range of difficulty levels; usually no permits are needed, unless an overnight stay in back country is involved. It is important to check weather conditions beforehand and use caution, never climb alone.

The point is to treat your family to an unforgettable outdoor adventure, so it doesn’t matter how you plan to camp or where you intend to go.

First comes first with a first aid kit.

No one can be too brave going anywhere he or she is not familiar with without taking a first aid kit. Unless you’re a cyborg, you will have to bring gauze, iodine solution, milk of magnesia, antibiotics, anti pyretics, and even mosquito repellent lotion.

Useful Get-ups

Dress for success! That should be the motto of any corporate slave. But for you, yours should be “Dress to Survive”, don’t you think so? Comfy clothes that won’t restrict your movements are the norm. If you go trekking, sturdy but comfy boots can be your best friend. A bandana can be very versatile, too. It can prevent sweat from blurring your vision and can also be a part of your first aid kit.

Backpack gizmos.

You’re not the king of the world. You will need a good compass and a reliable map. If you don’t how to use these, forget about your backpacking adventure.More backpacking “must-haves” such as a flashlight, a fire starter, and a Swiss knife are necessary too. But again, common sense should dictate to you what else you need to take. Stay safe!

If you’re bringing tins of beans, remember a manual can opener or pack your Swiss army knife. If you’re not sure what to bring, ask an associate at your local sporting store to help you choose your camping needs. Call on friends who like to camp, and ask them for advice.

Be Prepared

Apart from being submerged in wilderness, an important component of camping is the interaction with the localities, villagers and natives. These native guides know the unexplored places, the less traveled paths, the unknown facts, myths and stories about the locations.

Always be prepared for the weather when hiking. Carry a day pack with some water, a rain/wind jacket, a fleece/wool jacket or sweater, a first aid kit and some food. Good hiking boots are essential. On some of your hikes it is quite likely you will come across wildlife such as moose, black bears and grizzly bears, big horn sheep and deer. Many of the activities you might be interested in will be available in the towns near the parks. Various outfitters and companies outside some of the popular National Parks will offer excursions that go into the parks.

Plan on eating about as much while you’re camping as you eat when you’re at home. If you’re car camping and you have the extra space, it might not hurt to take a little extra food; but if you’re packing it in, every ounce counts, especially on long hikes. Be sure not to under pack your camping food – the only thing longer than a 20-miler is a 20-miler when you’re hungry. Starving your body while doing rigorous exercise, like hiking, could have adverse affects on your health.

Make Friends

With the hectic life many of us lead it would certainly be great to just “get away” from civilization and have fun in the wild outdoors. How many of us really know what to do when we get there or what to take with us in the “survival pack”? Camping can be a really refreshing lift to life, but roughing it may not come without some sort of price. Adequate preparation is a must and may prevent your trip into the wilds from becoming a disaster.

As I rounded a bend blasted through granite, just wide enough to accommodate a horse-drawn wagon, I braked suddenly and gasped.Make your van into something that’s usable for you, especially if it’s going to be your residence for days or weeks at a time.

Instead of going up to other campers and saying, “Hi, I’m Kerry and I’m here by myself” ask questions like “How can I contact you if I experience a problem” or “is this campground regularly patrolled?”Don’t advertise you are by yourself by finding campsites away from walking trails

Do Fidgety People Burn More Calories

November 21st, 2016 ernie Posted in Exercise | No Comments »

Do Fidgety People Burn More CaloriesDonald Trump claimed on the Dr Oz Show that he burns more calories by waving his hands. We wondered Do Fidgety People Burn More Calories in general? Donald Trump seems like a pretty high action/energy kind of guy. He apparently is overweight but looks great and does not seem to tire easily. We decided to look into this general question and see what a few experts think about this claim. Bottom line is that people who are fidgety and wave their hands a great deal will burn approximately 300 more calories a day compared to someone who is calmer.

Do Fidgety People Burn More Calories – Experts

Fidgeting clearly burns more calories than sitting behind a desk. Donald Trump may be better off on the campaign trail than running his business says Elizabeth DeRobertis, head dietitian at the Scarsdale Medical Group in Scarsdale, N.Y.

Just observe people at the mall the next time you are there. In general, overweight people are moving more slowly and are generally more relaxed. Many, not all, slim people are moving quicker, perhaps fidgeting more and burning more calories.

It just makes so much sense. The more you move, the more calories you are going to burn. However, fidgeting while burning calories will not help with things like improving cardiovascular capabilities. Muscle groups will not be strengthened. You need to focus on other types of exercises to improve in those areas.

What Makes A Hiking Boot Great

November 18th, 2016 ernie Posted in Backpacking | 1 Comment »

What Makes A Hiking Boot GreatWhat makes a hiking boot great? How do you chose footwear for comfort, protection, and durability.

Choosing hiking boots and footwear is one of the most important decisions you as a hiker or camper will make. They’ll either make your trip memorable or miserable. To find what’s best for you, ask yourself “What type of hiking do I do?”

Day Hiking (Light-weight)- Do you usually go for short hikes for one to several hours? During the week or weekend without a backpack? Then you’ll want to consider these. They’re lighter, flexible, and breathe better because they’re usually made of fabric and split-grain leather. They’re comfortable for day outings. But you’ll become fatigued and your feet will begin to bother you if you try to hike with a pack or for an extended trip. Because they aren’t designed to support you like the hiking boots.

Backpacking/Hiking (Mid-weight)- Stiffer mid-weight hiking boots provide more support and protection for shorter 2-3 day trips or even day hikes with or without a light to moderate load. If you hike for a few hours and want more support and/or up to three days on or off-trail on easy to moderate trails get a mid-weight leather backpacking boot.

Extended Backpacking (Mountaineering)- The best level of support, protection, and durability for heavier loads and longer trips. But they’re also usually heavier. Supports heavy loads of approximately 40+ pounds (could vary with hiking boot). If you hike for more than three days on or off-trail with a moderate to heavy pack on demanding terrain get an extended (heavy weight)backpacking boot. If you need to attach crampons for glaciers check to make sure the boots are compatible before you buy.

What Makes A Hiking Boot Great

For cold-weather hiking it’s critical to get waterproof insulated boots that breathe to keep you dry.

Full-grain leather and Nubuck suede take water repellent products well but keep in mind that they won’t waterproof a hiking boot NOT designed to be waterproof in the first place. The repellent will help shed water but if you’re walking through streams or deep puddles you’re going to get wet.

Waterproofing

You may or may not need waterproof hiking boots. Consider the environment you usually hike in and how long your trips are. If you do a lot of short desert hiking trips you probably don’t need waterproof boots. Actually in a dry environment they’ll only make it harder for your feet to breathe (more numerous or heavy layers mean less breath ability). Nylon mesh fabric breathes better than leather, but remember you’re making trade offs for durability, support, and protection.

Camping Can Be Fun For Kids

Camping Can Be Fun For KidsAt the mention of the word ‘camping’, why do children and even adults get excited and chomp at the bit to be off? For an urbanite, it affords a change from the restriction imposed by city life. The out of doors fills you with a sense of freedom under the open skies. The giving up of creature comforts doesn’t seem to matter when adventure beckons. The common worry is how to keep the children occupied. Camping Can Be Fun For Kids . Children are adaptable and you will find that they bring a great deal of enjoyment to the outing. With a little ingenuity, you can make it an experience they’ll never forget.

Children can never resist water. It doesn’t matter if the body of water is a small stream or a large lake, as long as you can find a convenient spot to paddle or swim in. They can spend hours splashing about, reveling in every minute of it. The pleasant change from the artificial pools of the city and the novelty of the natural surroundings add to their joy. First, check if the water is safe. books usually supply adequate information suggesting safe pools and warning against the dangerous ones. Don’t let the children swim without supervision, and it’s safer not to dive.

You can’t ask for a better way to take in the scenery than from a bike. Walking could be tough going and hot work as well. Hit the bike trail with a map. Take stock of your bearings and ride together. You don’t want anyone getting lost! Explore the surroundings in a leisurely manner.

Camping Can Be Fun For Kids

Prepare yourself by reading up on the fauna and flora of the region. Campsites usually have pamphlets on the birds and animals you are likely to spot. Have fun looking for them. Make a game of it. Vie with each other and total up the number of animals each one has seen. Compare the nocturnal fauna to the ones you’ve observed during the day. See that the children don’t get carried away and get too close to the animals. Take care not to agitate the latter.

When you play games, don’t get so noisy as to disturb the quiet that the animals are used to. Treat yourself to outdoor games. Find a clearing, without obstructions, (you don’t want accidents to spoil your holiday). Play good old tag or run races. Tug-of-war is another great idea.

The children’s love of going in search of things can be exploited with the game of scavenger hunt. This physical activity is a great way to help the kids get exercise. Instruct them to avoid plants like the sumac, oak and poison ivy, whose prickles are harmful.

It Can Be Fun For Kids

An activity that can be clubbed with the scavenger hunt is navigation. Show them how a compass works and give them a few tips on map reading as you go through the forest. It will stimulate their spirit of adventure.

Round off an exciting day with a campfire. This is entertainment and togetherness time! In the campfire’s warmth, sing and narrate stories. Some may have some eerie ones to narrate as well. Word games and riddles are fun too while toasting marshmallows and chomping on goodies like hotdogs.

Teach the children basic astronomy. There’s nothing more awe inspiring than to lie on the grass and gaze at the stars dotting that vast expanse of sky. Point out the planets and constellations you are familiar with. Wish on a shooting star and admire the grandness of the firmament.

Don’t let a sudden downpour dispirit you. Weather is unpredictable in some places more than in others. Take it in your stride and use the rain to your advantage. Take the opportunity of doing what you’ve always wanted to do—play in the rain. However, if there’s thunder and lightning, it’s better to stay indoors.

Above all, unwind. Give yourself up to nature. Enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings. How often do you get the opportunity? Feel the tension of the city leave you. Don’t carry any appliances with you. Enjoy quality time with your family and the friends you’ve come with.

These are just a few suggestions of how to keep you and the children occupied when out camping. The possibilities are endless. With a little imagination, you can come up with many more ideas making Camping Can Be Fun . Go out and have stupendous fun!

Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers

November 1st, 2016 ernie Posted in Backpacking | No Comments »

Tarp Shelters For Lightweight BackpackersWhy use tarp shelters? The biggest reason ultralight backpackers use them is to reduce pack weight. The lightest tent you can find will be close to three pounds. Some of the newest ultralight Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers weigh just seven ounces.

Weight isn’t the only advantage of Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers, though. They also give you room to move, and you can easily look around. You can quickly take them down when you’re ready to go. If it’s wet, just shake it off and it will fit in an outside pocket of your backpack. Even if they were the same weight, many prefer a tarp over a tent for most trips.

The lightest Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers weighs 16 ounces with all the strings. That seems heavy compared to the new ultralight tarps out there. Integral Designs Sil Tarp 5′ x 8′,for example, weighs just 7 ounces.

The Bozeman Mountain Works Stealth 0 Catenary Ridgeline Ultralight Backpacking Tarp weighs an amazing 5.7 ounces. With a name like that, you know it has to be expensive. Of course, almost any backpacking tarp will be lighter – and cheaper – than the lightest tents out there.

How To Use Tarp Shelters

You’ll probably need a bigger tarp than you think. A seven-foot roof may seem like it will cover your six-foot body well enough, until a blowing rain soaks your feet. Proper use is even more important than size, though.

Pitch the low side into the wind. Keep all sides low if a storm is coming. Evenly tighten guy lines. Use rocks, trees, trekking poles and whatever else helps. Pitch the tarp tightly, to keep it from flapping in the wind too much, which can loosen the strings or cause the tarp to tear.

If you haven’t used tarp shelters before, experiment until you can quickly set up in several different environments. Bring lightweight stakes, until you learn

Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers

how to use sticks and trees and rocks. No stakes means less weight to carry. There is always something to use, even up high on the tundra.

You might have to treat the seams with a sealant occasionally,or at least when you first buy your tarp. Buy seam-sealer anyplace that sells tarps and tents. You’ll need string or cord of some sort for tie-downs. Place varying lengths around the tarp, so you can untie and use the long ones where you need them.Sometimes that tree will be a little too far away.

Use 4′ by 7′ pieces of plastic for groundsheets. They’re opened-up giant garbage bags that weigh 2 ounces. They’re disposable and they’re cheap and easy to replace. Whatever you use, lay your bag on it, to be sure you’ll have room. You don’t want to be touching the wet ground just because you moved a little. On the other hand, if it’s too big it will catch rain out near the edge of the tarp, and funnel it back to you.

Mosquito’s keep a lot of ultralight backpackers from using tarp shelters. Repellent is a partial solution, as is using the tarp only when it isn’t too buggy. A head net helps, but keeping the rest of your body covered when it’s warm isn’t pleasant. Pitch camp in a high, breezy place and you’ll have fewer bug problems.

There are also mesh shelters you can pitch under your tarp. The lightest weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces. With a 7-ouncetarp, you’d be under 2 pounds for a shelter, and it comes with a floor, so you don’t have to bring a groundsheet. Ultra light tarps and tarp shelters, by the way, weigh less than 20 ounces which seems reasonable.

Slowing Metabolism with Age

October 21st, 2016 ernie Posted in Nutrition | No Comments »

Slowing Metabolism with AgeTurns out there are multiple reasons for a slowing metabolism with age that affects us all once we are over 20 years of age. Most seniors already know that their metabolism is slowing down. They really do not understand why other than that they are aging. Activity level, body maintenance and energy to process your food all add up to your metabolism rate.

Processing your Food – it takes energy to process food and turn it into the nutrients that your body can use. This is about 10% of your basic metabolism level.

Body Maintenance – accounts for 60 to 70% of the calories that you burn each day. Just your normal day to day activities will use this level of energy even when you are at rest doing your best couch potato impression.

Activity Level – Highly active adults will burn many more calories and increase their metabolism levels. You burn more calories and maintain muscle mass as well as cardio capabilities.  Bottom line is burn off more calories than you take in if you want to lose weight and maintain a higher metabolism.

Slowing Metabolism with Age – What to Do?

There are five things you can do to ramp up your metabolism and burn off more calories.

Increase intensity levels – do more exercise. Exercise every day for 20 minutes at least and focus on high intensity levels while you are doing this exercise.

Strength Training – build muscle. Muscle uses more energy and burns more calories.

Increase your Protein intake – reduce your fat intake and your carb intake to decrease your bad calories. Eating protein will help build those muscles.

Water Intake – drinking lots of water keeps you hydrated and your body working optimally. It helps to build muscle and keep metabolism high.

Don’t Starve Yourself – the body will react by decreasing your metabolism to conserve energy and resources. Eat regular meals and focus on healthy eating habits.

Coping with Slowing Metabolism

September 21st, 2016 ernie Posted in Nutrition | No Comments »

Coping with Slowing MetabolismWe will all find ourselves coping with slowing metabolism at some point in our lives. It may be in our senior years or it could also be at a younger age. There are several reasons why our metabolism slows down. Once your understand why your bodies metabolism slows, you can do something about it. You may be surprised when you read on. A slow metabolism means you burn less calories and you also gain weight unless you take the proper steps to counteract it.  There are three areas to consider. First is the base metabolism rate which is how many calories you need just to maintain your body at its current weight.

Second is the activity level or how many calories you burn through an active life style. Third is the number of calories it takes to digest the food you intake. The first consumes 60 to 70%, the second consumers 20% and the third consumes about 10% of the calories.

Coping with Slowing Metabolism

From the above three areas, it quickly becomes obvious what you need to do regardless of what age you are. As we age, our metabolic rate also slows because we are no longer growing, we are maintaining our weight, height etc. The only thing left is to either cut down on the calorie intake or to increase our activity level.

Fasting or starving ourselves will also decrease the metabolic rate.. It is important to eat regular meals, just cut back a little bit on the total amount of calories to avoid lowering your metabolic rate.

Next increase your activity level. Increase muscle mass by doing weight baring exercises. Creating muscles and using them burns calories and actually increases your metabolic rate. As we age we need to find ways of coping with slowing metabolism in our bodies. By tricking the body to deal with a higher activity rate, you will improve your strength, your cardio level and burn calories at the same time.

Start with regular exercise. Walking, lifting weights, cycling , golf or whatever sport you enjoy. Keep at it as long as you possibly can.

Not so fast. Over the past seven days 52% of my food intake has been carbs compared to 50% objective as set by the app. Fat was 31% compared to 30% and Protein was 17% compared to an objective of 20% as per the app. This is without actually making any changes to my diet or watching how much I ate each day. Calories were also on target and all of my nutrients were not in bad shape. Sounds good right?
