Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers

August 1st, 2017 ernie Posted in Backpacking | No Comments »

how to use tarp sheltersWhy use tarp shelters? The biggest reason ultralight backpackers use them is to reduce pack weight. The lightest tent you can find will be close to three pounds. Some of the newest ultralight tarps weigh just seven ounces. That’s why tarp shelters for lightweight backpackers are so popular. Read on for more about how to use tarp shelters.

Weight isn’t the only advantage of tarp shelters, though. They also give you room to move, and you can easily look around. You can quickly take them down when you’re ready to go. If it’s wet, just shake it off and it will fit in an outside pocket of your backpack. Even if they were the same weight, I’d still prefer a tarp over a tent for most trips.

The lightest of my own tarp shelters weighs 16 ounces with all the strings. That seems heavy now, when I look at the new ultralight tarps out there. Integral Designs Sil Tarp 5′ x 8′,for example, weighs just 7 ounces.

The Bozeman Mountain Works Stealth 0 Catenary Ridgeline Ulralight Backpacking Tarp weighs an amazing 5.7 ounces. With a name like that, you know it has to be expensive. Of course, almost any backpacking tarp will be lighter – and cheaper – than the lightest tents out there.

How To Use Tarp Shelters

You’ll probably need a bigger tarp than you think. A seven-foot roof may seem like it will cover your six-foot body well enough, until a blowing rain soaks your feet. Proper use is even more important than size, though.

Pitch the low side into the wind. Keep all sides low if a storm is coming. Evenly tighten guy lines. Use rocks, trees, trekking poles and whatever else helps. Pitch the tarp tightly, to keep it from flapping in the wind too much, which can loosen the strings or cause the tarp to tear.

If you haven’t used tarp shelters before, experiment until you can quickly set up in several different environments. Bring lightweight stakes, until you learn

Tarp Shelters For Lightweight Backpackers how to use sticks and trees and rocks. No stakes means less weight to carry. I’ve always found something to use, even up high on the tundra.

You might have to treat the seams with a sealant occasionally,or at least when you first buy your tarp. Buy seam-sealer any place that sells tarps and tents. You’ll need string or cord of some sort for tie-downs. I put varying lengths around the tarp, so I can untie and use the long ones where I need them.Sometimes that tree will be a little too far away.

I use 4′ by 7′ pieces of plastic for groundsheets. They’re opened-up giant garbage bags that weigh 2 ounces. They’re disposable, but I’ve used one for a week in the Rockies, and they’re cheap and easy to replace. Whatever you use, lay your bag on it, to be sure you’ll have room. You don’t want to be touching the wet ground just because you moved a little. On the other hand, if it’s too big it will catch rain out near the edge of the tarp, and funnel it back to you.

Mosquitoes keep a lot of ultralight backpackers from using tarp shelters. Repellent is a partial solution, as is using the tarp only when it isn’t too buggy. A head net helps, but keeping the rest of your body covered when it’s warm isn’t pleasant. Pitch camp in a high, breezy place and you’ll have fewer bug problems.

There are also mesh shelters you can pitch under your tarp. The lightest I’ve seen weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces. With a 7-ouncetarp, you’d be under 2 pounds for a shelter, and it comes with a floor, so you don’t have to bring a groundsheet. Ultra light tarps and tarp shelters, by the way, weigh less than 20 ounces,a standard I just invented, but it seems reasonable.

July 24th, 2017 ernie Posted in Lose Weight | No Comments »

Healthy Balanced Diet to Lose WeightConsumers spend millions of dollars every year on various diet plans, weight loss fads and more. With the US and Canada with the most overweight populations in the world something needs to be done. We cannot continue to live like this with all of the associated health issues that come from being overweight. We happen to think that there is another approach that is following a healthy balanced diet to lose weight instead of starving ourselves. No more yo-yo weight loss and then weight gains. It is time to follow a healthy balanced diet to lose weight and keep it off.

Healthy Balanced Diet to Lose Weight

A friend of mind recently lost 15 pounds in the last 4 months. I asked him why he did it and how he managed to lose so much weight so fast.

The reason he found the will power to lose weight was that his doctor told him he was a pre diabetic and unless he did something he was going to become a diabetic and would have to go on insulin. This was the motivation for him to get serious about losing weight.

Once he decided to lose weight he found that the next part took real will power and a change in diet. He still exercised, but not excessively. He focused on finding a healthy balanced diet plan. He still ate most items, but in much smaller quantities.

The one big change that he made was to reduce his carb intake. This meant that he cut way back on breads, rice and potatoes. He still would have very small portions from time to time. Once he increased his fruits and vegetables along with protein the weight began to fall off.

Now that is how you lose weight without spending a great deal of money and still have a healthy balanced diet!

Camping Food

July 1st, 2017 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

Dehydrated/freeze-dried camping food is great for hiking, backpacking, or camping meals. The main reason is that you don’t have to keep it cold to avoid spoiling. While coolers/refrigerators can work well in some situations, ice or electricity isn’t always available making dehydrated/freeze dried food very attractive. While removing the water helps preserve camping food it also has another benefit…

Camping, backpacking, or hiking food that’s freeze-dried or dehydrated can reduce weight by sixty to ninety percent. If you’re carrying a backpack or other hiking gear with a few days worth of camping food and supplies this can make a BIG difference.

Camping Food

As with any prepackaged food you’ll probably find most camping food portion/serving sizes extremely optimistic. Or after a long day of hiking…laughable. I’m not sure who dreamed up the system but keep it in mind when you’re buying it. Because otherwise you’ll probably be going hungry, or if you’re carrying a pack all day you might even be undernourished.

Something else to keep in mind is the design of the container itself. The containers with corners can make it difficult for the boiling water to mix with the camping food leaving dry spots. Also tall narrow containers make it almost impossible to reach inside with a spoon without getting as messy as a two year-old, as you work your way down to the bottom. (A quick fix is to trim off the top as you eat.) And if you’re a light eater or use them afterwards for trash some of the Camping Food containers have a”zip lock” type of closure which can come in handy, if they’re not trimmed to ribbons. 😉

Some camping foods can now be heated with a heating pouch by adding water to a chemical heating source. The advantage is there’s no flame. The drawback is they weigh more than the pouch by itself and there’s more trash to dispose of properly. So it may be better to just bring a small stove if you’re backpacking.

Camping food offers trade offs. While it isn’t usually gourmet that doesn’t mean it has to be bad. After all a gourmet meal would make for a lot of extra weight and inconvenience. Not my idea of a fun trip. The reason people buy it is because it’s light, convenient, and it can provide a quick hot meal.

Coffee Drinkers live Longer Big Study Finds

June 25th, 2017 ernie Posted in Diet | No Comments »

Recently the results of a large study were released. This study found that coffee tends to reduce inflammation. Which in turns causes our body to age if not kept in check. It has long been known that coffee will dehydrate a person’s body and this may be why inflammation in the body is reduced. Whether it is joints that are slightly inflamed or our organs, reducing the inflammation allows the body to recover and repair those areas. But can too much coffee also not be good for you? That is the question that many people are asking. Basically we think that common sense should apply.  The theme of our web site and our own life has been everything in moderation.

Coffee Drinkers live Longer Big Study Finds

Many people find drinking coffee or anything with caffeine in it will keep them up at night. Some feel that it irritates the lining of the stomach. Other folks just don’t like it and prefer tea or cola drinks.

Keeping with the everything in moderation theme why not only drink coffee in the morning and avoid it at night or late afternoon. If it bothers your stomach, try an alternate that has caffeine in it or have it with food to dilute the coffee. Try another type of drink to see if that works.

It may not work for everyone but if it shows that coffee drinkers live longer big study finds, then I am going to drink coffee in moderation at least to make sure that I am receiving some of the benefits. Of course the writer happens to like coffee as well, but only in the morning or early afternoon.

How To Lose Weight – And Keep It Off

June 22nd, 2017 ernie Posted in Lose Weight | No Comments »

lose weightThe best way to lose weight is about living a healthier life than what you may be living now. You will need a complete lifestyle change and you will need to be committed. The body loses about 2 pounds a week optimally and that’s 2 pounds that stay off. When you drop at a faster rate your body could potentially rebound and either plateau your weight loss or put extra weight on. If you are committed then you should reach your goal to lose weight.

There are 5 most important things that must go together in any workout program to lose weight. These are part of changing your complete lifestyle to one that is healthier. They also help you to naturally optimize your metabolism. The faster your metabolism the better your body uses your food for energy, instead of storing it as fat.

I put them in the order of importance  to lose weight for maximum weight loss.

Eat more. Yes eat more.

More meals that is. It is best to eat a small meal every 3-4 hours. The meal should be just large enough to where you are not hungry, as opposed to eating you are full. There is a difference, think of it as no bigger than the size of your two fists put together. Eating 1 or 2 meals a day slows your metabolism down. You should have at least 4-6 meals a day. For most a ratio of carbs-proteins-fats should be 50%-25%-25% is good, but each person is unique.

Drink more water.

Most of us don’t have enough water. This means our bodies are dehydrated. Two things a dehydrated body has trouble doing, one is releasing water. In order to lose fat you must be able to release water, because fat cells in your body are composed of mostly water. A dehydrated body cannot build very well. Muscle tone indicates a constant building state in your body. If your body isn’t building that means it is losing muscle and it’s never good to lose muscle that slows your metabolism and makes you look flabby.

Maintain a balanced workout regimen of cardio and resistance (weights). Cardio is good for fat burning and it’s easy to do and to progress yourself. Resistance is a little harder because it’s not as easy to know what to do. If weights aren’t your thing then try Yoga or Pilates. Both are very effective resistance and core training and can help you maintain lean muscle and increase your overall metabolism.

Smart supplementation

This is your best solution to making sure you get the nutrients your food doesn’t give you. A daily multivitamin will suffice in most cases, and if you don’t like pills they sell it in liquid form. Plus cleanses, as well as detox formulas are awesome for eliminating toxins we take into our bodies without knowing.

Sleep is a very important part of any healthy lifestyle regimen. When we sleep our bodies and minds refresh themselves and allow us to function at an optimal level. Sleeping allows muscles to rebuild themselves and when they do that, it speeds your metabolism.

You may ask why I gave you this long list instead of just telling you what exercises to do. The reason is if you think that exercising is all you need then you are mislead. If exercising is all we needed to look and feel great then everybody who works out at the gym would have great bodies and be healthy. If you have been to a gym before you know its not true.

Backpacking Journals – Preserve Your Backpacking Experiences

June 1st, 2017 ernie Posted in Backpacking | No Comments »

Backpacking TipsBackpacking is a great way to escape the rat race and be one with nature. Alas, your backpacking experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep backpacking journals about your adventures to refer to.

Backpacking Journals

Take a minute to give some consideration to your most recent backpacking experience. What sticks out in your mind? Now think about the first time you ever went backpacking. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the geography, people you went with, particular backpacking routes and spectacular views. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you had kept a backpacking journal, this won’t be the case.

There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your backpacking experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.

A good backpacking journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact so you don’t have to take up unnecessary space for other things. Second, it should have a case to protect it from rain, spills and so on. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things.

Preserve Your Backpacking Experiences

Cues should include:

1. Who you went backpacking with,

2. Where you backpacked and if you enjoyed it,

3. Who you met and contact information for them,

4. The geographic and weather conditions,

5. Routes you tried and how far you made it, and

6. Any unique things that occurred while backpacking.

At the end of the trip, you should be able to get the following from your journal:

1. Contact information for other backpackers and people you met,

2. Enough detail to provide you or a friend with a guide if you backpack the location a second time.

3. Memories to reflect upon years later, and

4. Something to pass on to your friends, children and grandchildren.

To get the most out of your backpacking journal, you should write in it during backpacking breaks or immediately after. Every trip is special, even if you just go out for a weekend.

Backpacking is a great way to commune with nature. Make sure to preserve the experience.

Whenever you are hiking anywhere including the Rogue river, always let someone know where you are going. Tell them when you will return and jike with a buddy. Take extra water, clothes and some food just in case you do get lost. It could mean the difference in surviving until someone finds you.

May 21st, 2017 ernie Posted in Lose Weight | No Comments »

Forget about Weighing MyselfDo you hate the scales you use to weigh yourself? If you are one of these people who weigh themselves everyday, you probably have a little bit of paranoia as you approach the scales. Wouldn’t you like to forget about weighing myself every day. How To Pick Warm Comfortable Sleeping Bags For Camping

May 1st, 2017 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

How To Pick Warm Comfortable Sleeping Bags For CampingShould sleeping bags be made of down or synthetic? What sleeping bag is best for camping, hiking or backpacking? How To Pick Warm Comfortable Sleeping Bags For Camping. A guide to make your decision easier. First off it should at least be rated for the lowest possible temperature you’ll encounter. You may want to even go a little lower just to be on the safe side. Obviously the main purpose is to hold your body heat in to insulate you from the cooler air. So the better the insulation holds your body heat in the warmer and more comfortable you’re going to be.

Insulation

Down-the filamentous and fluffy layer underneath the feathers.Positives: All being equal down is warmer, lighter, more comfortable, compresses smaller, and can last a lifetime if cared for properly. Goose down is the standard others are compared to. The more it lofts the better it insulates. This is known as fill-power, the higher the number the better it retains heat.

Negatives: Down looses most all of it’s insulating proper ties when wet, takes a long time to dry outdoors, is more expensive short-term, and may require professional cleaning.

Synthetic- These are usually hollow plastic threads that serveto trap warm air. Positives: Synthetic sleeping bags retain heat better when wet, costs less short-term when compared to the same temperature rating as down, dries quicker than down, and is hypo-allergenic. It’s usually well-suited for recreational use,but consider your own individual needs.

Negatives: They’re bulkier, heavier, less conforming, and can lose their insulating properties after a few seasons of hard use because of breakdown. More expensive long-term.

Shapes/Styles

Child’s/Kid sleeping bags- A kid has a harder time staying warmth an an adult, so keep this in mind when you’re getting them a sleeping bag. A cool summer night can chill a child quickly so consider a mummy bag.

How To Pick Warm Comfortable Sleeping Bags For Camping

Mummy- Provides more warmth for cold conditions and is more compact/lighter when packed. The narrow cut and insulated hood means less air for your body to heat. This bag is wide at the shoulders and narrows down to the feet. The drawback is it restricts movement. That said the Marmot Saw tooth sleeping bag is a good light 3-season 15 Degree down sleeping bag ideal for backpacking.

Rectangular- These sleeping bags are ideal for campground camping. They give you more room to move around in. They’re not suited for the winter due to the larger area you have to heat and the open top design. This is the best design for double sleeping bags, usually you can just zip two of the same kind together. Not for weight-conscious backpacking and hiking gear enthusiasts.

Semi-Rectangular- A combination of the mummy and rectangular sleeping bags this hybrid splits the middle between room to move and warmth.

Comfort Ratings- The “comfort rating” is the minimum temperature that a sleeping bag is designed for. Of course this is just an approximation as people tolerate temperature differently.

Arizona Rafting Whitewater

April 28th, 2017 ernie Posted in Arizona | No Comments »

Arizona Rafting WhitewaterWhitewater rafting in Arizona, brings an image of the Colorado River rushing through the Grand Canyon to mind. There is also the Verde River and The Salt River. Which offer unique whitewater experiences and are less popular with vacationing whitewater rafters.

The Colorado River basin is enormous and complex (naturally so). Even before-modern Americans began hacking it up into one of the most complicated and controversial water-delivery systems in the world). Virtually every other river in the region eventually will flow into the Colorado. In the whitewater world, the Colorado is “the big one,” and even today, the ultimate experience.

Arizona Rafting Whitewater

The image of Arizona whitewater rafting is one of power. Big volume rapids where the surge of moving water even more than the configuration of canyon, boulders, and bank creates the rafting challenge. The water is a dull brown, muddy and opaque, frothing rather than sparkling.

Rafting the full 225 miles of the Colorado River is perhaps the top adventure travel dream trip in America. A few other rivers in Arizona provide shorter, scenic trips.

White water rafting on the Verde River

The Verde River is Arizona’s only national wild and scenic river. The section from near the town of Childs to Horseshoe Reservoir runs most of the way through the Mazatzal Wilderness.

Trips run from February to April when spring run-off brings the whitewater up to Class 3. The Verde River can be floated practically any month of the year. Its primary river-running season is February to April. With the best being March and April. Always check conditions ahead of time. Guides are available.

The season on the Verde River runs from February to April. Most trips run about 25 miles of up to class III difficulty rapids.

Whitewater rafting on the Salt River in Arizona

Salt River Canyon provides some excellent whitewater rafting opportunities. For example, single- and multi- day trips are available with rapids up to Class 4. Single day trips are 10 miles and often include a pack lunch and possible short hikes in side canyons. As a result, 2, 3 and 5-day trips are also available. They bring you deeper and deeper into the canyon and away from civilization.

The Salt River is situated along the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau between mountain and desert ecosystems. The result is an interesting variety of plant, animal and bird life. Trips start through oak and juniper woodlands before dropping into the Lower Sonoran desert with its magnificent saguaro cactus.

Best Diet seventh Year Running

April 21st, 2017 ernie Posted in Nutrition | No Comments »

The best diet seventh year running is called DASH which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The main concept of DASH  is to focus on eating less salt while eating healthy food. This includes all food that already have salt added to them as well as the salt you add at the dinner table. Reduce hypertension and improve many areas of your body that could suffer from high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries and damage to organs over a period of time. For the seventh year running, DASH has been voted by nutrition experts as the best diet for consumers. It beat out all of the fad diets that cost consumers thousands of dollars every year.

Best Diet seventh Year Running – What is it?

DASH entails focusing on lower-sodium foods and foods rich in potassium, magnesium and calcium. Bottom line: fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy is good. Sugary snacks, red meat and salty nibbles are bad.You have to read the labels and make decisions about prepared food. Most contain either a high level of added salt or sugar to keep them fresh longer.  Even bread has a lot of salt added to it.

Load up on brown rice, fish, fat-free yogurt. Avoid the candy aisle and prepared foods which contain a large amount of salt per serving. All of this assumes that you maintain proper amounts of fibre and vitamins as part of your daily intake. A balanced level of food will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle as well.

Eating healthy does take more effort. Gone are all of the prepared foods that you take out of the freezer and heat up. preparing low salt meals and low sugar meals takes more effort. But then again to effort, no results. Your family will appreciate your efforts in the long run.

Carolina In North rafting whitewater

April 21st, 2017 ernie Posted in Carolina | No Comments »

Carolina In North rafting whitewaterNorth Carolina whitewater rafting offers exciting experiences for the outdoor enthusiasts. Several of the rivers are summarized for Carolina In North rafting whitewater:

The Nantahala is Western North Carolina’s most scenic river for whitewater rafting in the Smokies — eight miles of rugged mountain beauty interrupted by twenty stretches of Class II rapids, beginning with “Patton’s Run” and ending with the Class III beast, “Lesser Wesser.” While the “Nanny” is a river to be respected, it is not fearsome. Its rapids provide training for Olympic kayakers and thrills for paddlers from age 7 to 70 alike.

The French Broad River got its name because the river flowed north toward French owned land and because the river is so broad (wide). The main stem of the French Broad River is in Rosman, North Carolina. The French Broad River is one of two rivers that flows North in the United States. It flows 210 miles through Asheville, North Carolina, then north to Tennessee and into the Mississippi River and then into the Gulf of Mexico. The French Broad River is a free flowing river that includes plenty of small mouth bass and catfish. Which makes for a great day of fishing. The French Broad River is one of the oldest rivers with the Nile and New river predating the French Broad.

Carolina In North rafting whitewater

The North Carolina whitewater rafting French Broad River is a free flowing river with it’s headwaters high in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Rosman and Brevard NC. Flowing from the Devil’s Courthouse on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the French Broad River then flows to Asheville, NC before turning north and west toward Marshall, NC, Hot Springs, NC and Tennessee. Water levels vary throughout the season.

The French Broad River is a great NC rafting river. While not too wild for the novice, the French Broad River has plenty to offer the experienced rafter. The rapids range from class I to III on the half-day white water rafting trips, and from class I-IV on the full day NC rafting trip. These are small to medium sized rapids on the class I to VI classification scale. The white water rapids on the French Broad River are considered drop-pool type rapids. Typically the rapids consists of a drop with a calmer pool at the bottom of the rapid.

The float trip stretch of the French Broad River has beautiful scenery. A few rapids, and plenty of opportunity for swimming and floating. The float trip is a great way for families with small children (minimum age is 4 for the float trip) to enjoy some time together on a fantastic NC river. If you just want to have a relaxing and scenic float. The French Broad River float trip offers fantastic mountain scenery, fascinating history, and lots of splashing fun.

North Carolina In North rafting whitewater is blessed with a long whitewater rafting season. Here in the Southern Appalachians from mid-March to early November. And unlike the cold water of other rivers in Western North Carolina, the French Broad River is cool and inviting.

Using 4 Season Tents

April 18th, 2017 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

There is no need to get 4 season tents for gentle summer camping. Even if there is a heavy downpour, the use of sleeping pads combined with adequate planning should keep everything fairly dry. Sometimes campers are using 4 season tents because they just want to deal with one tent.

The important thing is to not camp at the bottom of a hill, to make sure the rain fly is secure, and to take advantage of natural cover. But, a four season tent can be a nice thing to have for extreme conditions, and if you have the money to spend on one, it is a luxury that can really improve your camping experience.

Using 4 Season Tents

Basically, the difference is that a 4 season tent is tighter, with heavier outer walls. When it is all zipped up, there is no space anywhere for the elements to get in. In addition, they are often stabler so that they can resist extremely heavy storms if need be. This does not mean, however, that you cannot use 4 season tents in nicer weather. Many styles  come with the ability to unzip the outer fly so that you can keep cool on summer days, while still braving near-arctic temperatures in the winter.

You will find, however, that the more extreme the conditions for which it was designed, the more specialized a 4 season tent will be. For example, they are not things that you would like to take camping on a warm summer night. The ventilation panels are small, with the result that it will be stuffy and hot at night if you are camping during the summer with them. Additionally, they are made of heavier, stronger material, and as a result are an added burden for your normal camping trip.

And of course, good 4 season tents can be prohibitively expensive, running upwards of $500 dollars sometimes. Compare this to a 1-2 person summer tent that you might buy at your camping store. I got mine for $30 dollars and, although it provides little warmth, it works alright during the summer when combined with a decent sleeping bag. The truth of the matter is, it is important to think about what you will be doing before you go out and buy expensive mountaineering equipment. You must make sure that your equipment fits its purpose.

Using A Hammock When Camping

April 11th, 2017 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

Using A Hammock When CampingHammocks are starting to become staples in camping gear and have become more popular over the years. Several campers have opted to using a hammock when camping instead of the usual tent and tarp, attesting to its packing convenience and ease of use. Using A Hammock When Camping is another way to enjoy your outdoors experience.

However, there are some who remain conventional over the methods of camping that relegate the use of a hammock as nothing more than a novelty or a fad. But for its legions of fans, a hammock surely beats having to sleep on the ground.

The advantages linked to using hammocks are vast. Here are some of the reasons more and more happy campers are becoming happier campers with the use of hammocks.

Using A Hammock When Camping

Comfort

A hammock promises that you will not sleep on the ground. Sure, you can carry around an air mattress but it will only add weight to your already full load. If you have a bad shoulder, back or hip, sleeping on the ground might not be the best option for you. Your body will thank you more if you opt for a hammock, instead.

Less movement

If you sleep in a hammock, you are not likely to toss and turn while you sleep because it protects you snugly while at slumber. Once you find your most comfortable position in a hammock, chances are you will assume this post until you wake up and feel more refreshed, as opposed to sleeping on the ground. A hammock that is properly set up has positive orthopedic benefits.

More site alternatives

It’s difficult to set up a tent on a very rocky surface, so most campers have to look for plane ground first before they set up camp. However, hammock users may settle anywhere, as long there is something they can attach the hammock to. You can even camp anywhere even if the ground is damp and won’t have to waste time and energy looking for a perfect and dry spot to rest.

Goodbye critters and ground nuisances

You will no longer have to worry about bugs, poison ivy, thorns and other animals that crawl into your sleeping bag at night if you use a hammock. Also, you won’t leave traces of your presence in a particular site like the ones that are left by tarps and tents.

Using A Hammock When Camping – Easy set up and multiple use

It only takes about two minutes to set up a hammock. Also, aside from being a good resting place, it can be a good recreational tool, like a swing or nice chair. It sure beats having to sit on rocks, right?

Hammocks, therefore, a great device to bring when you’re going camping. It’s less bulky and affords you greater comfort. So don’t listen to those camping purists when they tell you hammocks are just gimmicks. Instead, listen to what your body needs — and that is a comfortable resting place when you need respite from hours of hiking.

How To Have A Comfortable Sleep When Camping!

April 4th, 2017 ernie Posted in Camping | No Comments »

How To Have A Comfortable Sleep When CampingThe last thing you want to happen when you’re 20 miles into the woods is to find your sleeping bag is not warm enough. You will be facing a very long and restless night which can ruin your spirits and sap your strength for the next day. This post is about, How To Have A Comfortable Sleep When Camping!

How To Have A Comfortable Sleep When Camping

So how do you make sure you’ve selected the right sleeping bag for your needs? There are several aspects to consider:

GOOSE DOWN or SYNTHETIC?

There are pros and cons to most of the options available in sleeping bags.

Goose down is very warm. It is lightweight to carry and can be easily compressed for travel and quickly regain form when shaken out. It is by far a better choice for backpackers who intend to carry the bag with them for extended trips because of the lighter weight and smaller packing. However, goose down is also more expensive and loses its insulating properties when wet – a consideration if sleeping outdoors or traveling in inclement weather.

Synthetic filled bags are cheaper than goose down and retain their warmth even in wet conditions. They dry faster than down and are good choices if traveling by boat or sleeping outdoors on the ground. However, synthetic bags are heavier and larger which can be a downside if you are hiking long distances with the bag.

For the average family camper synthetic bags are the least expensive and least affected by wet conditions. If traveling by car to a campground the size and weight of a synthetic bag should not be a problem.

RECTANGLE, TAPERED or MUMMY BAG?

As with the insulating materials, the shape of bag you choose will depend on your specific needs with pros and cons for each type.

Rectangle bags are most similar to bed sleeping and most familiar to the average user. They permit room for movement and you can easily zip two bags together for shared sleeping. However, rectangle bags are the biggest and not the best option for carrying on extended hikes.

Tapered bags are somewhat narrower towards the feet area of the sleeping bag. This shape provides less freedom of movement but more warmth because of the restricted space.

Mummy bags are the smallest and lightest to carry. They are very snug to the body (as the name suggests) with a hood that can be fitted around the head to conserve the greatest amount of body heat. While the average user may find the mummy bag uncomfortable to sleep in because of the restriction, they are the best choice for cold weather camping and long hikes because of their warmth and small size.

WHICH TEMPERATURE RATING?

Sleeping bags will list the coldest temperature they are suitable for sleeping in. Depending on if you are camping in the summer or colder months you will need to choose a bag accordingly. Also take into consideration if you are normally cold or hot when sleeping and make the adjustments.

In most cases it is recommended to choose a warmer bag since you can always open it for venting if it is too warm. The temperature rating is based on using a sleeping pad under the sleeping bag which conserves body heat from the ground.

How To Have A Comfortable Sleep When Camping ADDITIONS:

If you frequently camp out you may want to consider a liner for your bag. Which will increase its warmth and can be washed separately, saving your sleeping bag from extra wear and tear.

You can also purchase sleeping bag covers. Some of these can substitute for a warm weather sleeping bag and can extend an all season bag into a cold weather bag by increasing the warmth. They can also provide extra protection from wet conditions and are a good choice for protecting goose down sleeping bags.

How comfortable you are when you sleep will drastically affect your enjoyment of a camping or hiking trip. Saving five or ten dollars at the expense of a good nights sleep will not seem like a good idea when you are tired and cold out in the woods, so choose wisely.

Hiking Shoes And Thin Socks – A Backpacking Winner

April 1st, 2017 ernie Posted in Hiking | No Comments »

Hiking shoes versus hiking boots? Hiking shoes win. Okay, next issue? No, really. Hiking or running shoes are better for most backpacking trips, at least during late spring, summer and early fall. Boots are heavy, hot, stinky, and stay wet forever. A pound on your feet is like five on your back (some say six), so three-pound boots leave you much more tired at the end of the day.

Hiking Shoes And Ankle Support

You may have heard arguments for the necessity of ankle support, but throughout history people managed without stiff ankle-supporting boots. The problem is weak ankles, not a lack of support. You can solve this by walking a little each week on uneven ground (not in the mall).

Some may need boots, but be sure your ankle problems are not just due to a lack of exercise before you settle for backpacking in hiking boots. You may also need hiking boots if you carry more than thirty pounds when you backpack. Cut the weight down, though, and you’ll be more comfortable anyhow.

Why Running Or Hiking Shoes?

Feet stay cooler in a good running shoes than in hiking boots. This means fewer blisters. After switching to running shoes and lightweight socks years ago, I stopped getting blisters. I don’t mean fewer blisters. I mean haven’t had one blister since I switched. Not even after a 110-mile 7-day trek in the Rockies, for example.

Hiking Shoes And Thin Socks – A Backpacking Winner

How To Choose Your Shoes

Try to keep below two pounds per pair, unless you have size 13feet. If the weights are not shown in a catalog, you’ll have to guess which are lighter based on the description and photo. Quality shoes have soles stitched to the uppers, so look under the insoles (a removable insole is another sign of quality shoes). You can usually find a good pair of running shoes that weighs less than 28 ounces for under $80, or half of that on close outs.

There’s nothing quite as liberating as ditching the heavy pack and heavy boots and hitting the trail in running shoes. You get to go more miles, and in comfort. You get to run up a hill just to see what’s there. I have yet to meet a person who has tried backpacking in hiking or running shoes – and then returned to boots.

Guide Rafting Whitewater

March 28th, 2017 ernie Posted in White Water | 1 Comment »

Whitewater rafting attracts thousands of participants every year. Whitewater rafting can be safe and fun for the whole family, from the beginner to the advanced paddlers. A simple guide rafting Whitewater guide follow:

Classification of Rapids:

Class I – Easy. Small waves in fast moving water. Few obstacles.
Class II – Novice. Wide channels and rapids that are easy to navigate, without many turns or obstacles. Small waves less than two feet high.
Class III – Intermediate. Strong currents require training and ability to maneuver quickly and effectively. From this class on, rafters require a guide. Not suitable for young children.
Class IV – Advanced. Powerful rapids for strong paddlers that can handle fierce turns and spins. Drops and waves are common.
Class V – Expert. Violent, dangerous rapids, usually through obstructed channels, tight turns, and soaring falls. Requires professional equipment.
Class VI – Unrunnable. Likelihood of death in attempting class 6 runs.

Types of Crafts

Kayaks – Kayaks designed for whitewater are usually shorter than sea kayaks and most are made of plastic (although fiberglass kayaks are popular among racers).

Rafts – The preferred type of craft for large groups, they are made of inflatable plastic, and can handle almost any type of current.

Catarafts — Similar to rafts but easier to maneuver, they consist of two inflatable tubes held together by a frame.

Canoes — Made of fiberglass or plastic, they can handle an Eskimo roll the same way kayaks do.

Guide Rafting Whitewater

Fall has always been one of the most amazing months for rafting, to add to the incredible scenery, bears, mountain goats, deer, and cougars are often seen along the way. Also, during lower flow times, the big hits and tight, technical maneuvers make for a very exciting ride!”

Summer rafting is usually more calm, due to lower water volume. Some rivers provide daily dam releases from May through early October; others take advantage of melting snow (which increases water flow).
