How Your Home Security System Works
By Alek Peterson
Home security systems are becoming increasingly common purchases for people in all walks of life. Uncertain times have led many of us to realize how precious our homes and assets are when faced with the thought of having to replace them. While many people purchase home security systems, a large percentage never take time to understand how each aspect of the system works. This knowledge can help illustrate why a professionally installed system with multiple ways of protecting homes and owners is the best idea when it is time to choose a system.

The first part of the security system to be discussed is the door and window alarms. This is a simple design that is very effective. Most of these alarms use a closed circuit design. What this means is that the circuit has electricity flowing through it constantly. When the door or window is opened, the circuit is opened as well, stopping the flow of electricity, which triggers an alarm when the system is active. Open circuit systems work in reverse, with opening the door or window closing the circuit to trigger an alarm. These systems can be less costly, but are also easier for a thief to circumvent, as cutting the wires will lead to the failure of the machine. If the wires are cut on a closed circuit machine, it would open the circuit and sound the alarm.

Almost all systems also have a control box and keypad that are connected to each entryway circuit. A control box will have its own power supply and

battery backup, meaning that even in the event of a power failure or if the wires leading to the alarm are cut, the alarm will still function in the event of an intrusion. Until the security code is entered on the keypad, the alarm will continue to sound and will trigger the system to contact the security company.

Another typical home security feature is an infrared motion detector. This type of motion detector works by using sensors that detect changes in the infrared energy given off by an intruder's body heat. The systems are fine tuned to only respond to sudden or rapid changes in heat, as heat fluctuates mildly over time. These systems are even fine tuned well enough to differentiate between an intruder and a family pet, reducing the amount of false alarms triggered by household companions such as dogs or cats.

The last aspect of the Home Security system to explain is the auto-dialer. This is a device connected to your phone and security system that contacts the security company in case of an intrusion. It lets the company know what alarm is going off and in what room the triggering event occurred, providing the company with all the information necessary to give to emergency service personnel.

Your Home Security system is a valuable piece of equipment. A small monthly fee is a great investment on the protection of your home, belongings, and family. There has really never been a better time to purchase a home security than right now.
