Were Do I Charge My Electric Car’s Batteries

May 7th, 2012 admin Posted in Electric Cars | No Comments »

All of the major auto manufacturers are offering some form of electric cars these days. Some are hybrid cards while others are electric only. Hybrid cars run on both gasoline engines as well as electricity and most recharge the batteries utilizing the engine, the brakes etc to recharge the batteries. Electric cars on the other must be recharged each night or after discharging the batteries over a 40 or 60 mile trip depending on the what they are rated for and how you drive. the problem for many prospective new  electric car owners is were do they recharge their vehicles and who will pay for the cost! If you pay for your own electricity were you live, then there is usually no problem. But what do you do if you share the cost of electricity as in a condo or apartment building? What if there are no places to plugin your electric car for the night? then what do you do?

A Primer on Electric Car Recharging Systems

Some electric cars have two different charging systems. One system will accept 120-volt and the other will accept 240-volt power from a normal electrical outlet.

The normal 115 volt household charging system has the advantage of convenience — anywhere you can find an outlet, you can recharge. The disadvantage is charging time and what the owner of the outlet thinks about it.

A typical household 120-volt outlet has a 15-amp circuit breaker, meaning that the maximum amount of energy that the car can consume is approximately 1,500 watts, or 1.5 kilowatt-hours per hour. The battery pack in a typical car needs 12 to 15 kilowatt-hours for a full recharge, so it can take 10 to 12 hours to fully charge the vehicle using this technique.

By installing a 240-volt circuit (such as the outlet for an electric dryer)(you will need an electrician to install this circuit), the car might be able to receive 240 volts at 30 amps, or 6.6 kilowatt-hours per hour. This connection provides significantly faster charging, and can fully recharge the battery pack in four to five hours.

What does it Cost to Recharge

Electricity in Ontario, Canada is 10.8 cents per kilowatt-hour at peak and 6.2 cents per kilowatt-hour at night. Assuming a full charge of 15 KW’s, it will cost you $1.62 during the day or $.93 at night to recharge your car. Assuming 80 miles on a full battery, the cost per mile is therefore 1.1 cents per mile, assuming off peak charging. Gasoline costs $3.60 per gallon on average at time of writing this post and if we assume a car gets 30 miles to the gallon, then the cost per mile is 12 cents per mile for gasoline. A huge Savings!

Let’s assume you drive your car on average 15,000 miles per year, then the savings in gasoline alone would be $1635.00. Now while you are achieving these savings, someone has to pay for the electricity you are using if you are not recharging from your own homes system.

The Ethics of Recharging Your Electric Car’s Batteries

So were will you recharge your car’s batteries? At home of course, but there may be other places as well, such as:

  • While visiting a friend
  • At work
  • In a condo or apartment complex parking lot
  • Public recharging places

While we are not talking about a lot of money, many people are going to not like the idea that they are paying for you to recharge your car. That is just the way people are and there is not much you can do about it. So if you are visiting a friend for the evening or for a few days, do you plug in your car? do you offer to pay for the electricity? We think that yes you  should and you should have available the calculations to show just how much you will be using. We also think that most people will say, forget it when they see what it actually costs to recharge your cars batteries.

Some work locations will offer recharging as an incentive and a public relations incentive, so take advantage of this feature when it is offered. Otherwise you may have to negotiate with the property manager to allow you to plug in and recharge your cars batteries.

Gas Price Comparison

April 21st, 2012 admin Posted in Gasoline prices | No Comments »

There are lots of tools available on the web to help you do gas price comparison in virtually every city across North America. We all need help these days with the price of gasoline going up so much.

One tool I use is called “Gas Buddy” which will show you the latest gas prices that gasoline is being sold for in the area nearest you. They rely on local people inputting to the web site to keep the prices up to date and they provide an excellent service to the public.

Gas Price Comparison

When you compare prices in this manner it quickly becomes clear that the prices really do not vary that much. You may find that the price will vary by a few cents per gallon or liter depending on were you live. The government has never been able to prove price fixing for the price of gasoline, bit it is pretty obvious when the price of gas is virtually the same just about every were.

The only difference seems to be from the difference in taxes when you go from one state to the next. Some service stations will price their gas a little higher if there is no local competition, claiming shipping costs, but it is really because they can get away with it.

Gas Prices Continue to Rise

April 7th, 2012 admin Posted in Gasoline prices | No Comments »

Gas prices continue to rise, hitting $3.90 in the last week of March. for some reason the people in the United States are not saying much about it. although the news people dutifully report the daily increases, it does not seem to get much traction. There are just too many other stories around that have more interest than rising gas prices which has been going on now for over 3 months. All I know is that it has probably added $200 to the cost of my vacation this year! That is a direct cost since we tend to go on driving vacations.

Anyone traveling via plane will see a jump as well and of course all of our food costs are going to increase as well. With all of the truckers on the road, and the cost of diesel going up, food prices are going to increase as well. So why is the US consumer not complaining more, or have we just given up and are accepting what is going to be the inevitable. Higher prices for gasoline are here to stay!

Why is the US Consumer so Ambivalent

Rising Gas Prices Affecting Your Vacation Plans

March 21st, 2012 admin Posted in Gasoline prices | No Comments »

Rising Gas Prices Affecting Your Vacation Plans

For many of us we are thinking of our summer vacation coming up and wondering if high gas prices will have a negative impact on those plans. Gas prices have increased over 20% in the past few months and there are rumors that prices will go even higher. So how much will your vacation budget need to increase to handle the increase in prices for gasoline if you are going on a driving vacation?

The Real Impact on Your Vacation

Let’s assume you are going to drive a 1000 miles on your vacation. Half on the way to your destination and half on the way back. This represents a nice round number and may be short for some people and too long for others. Either way you can prorate the numbers to get a feel for your own cost. In order to understand the cost difference we have to make a number of additional assumptions. Each of these assumptions will be somewhat conservative and you may need to adjust them to match your won vehicle and the price of gasoline in your state.

Exploding Gas Prices

March 7th, 2012 admin Posted in Gasoline prices | No Comments »

Exploding Gas Prices

Once again oil prices are on the rise just in time for the summer vacation in North America and Europe. It feels as if this is a plot against anyone who wants to take a driving vacation or fly somewhere for their summer vacation. Anyone who drives to work has already felt the pinch of gasoline prices that have gone up as much as 20% in the last few months. We are currently on a driving trip across the country and I was wondering just how much the increasing gas prices were going to affect our trip. Well it turns out that if you take the average price of gas at the time of writing this post as $3.63 and compare it to the price of gasoline at the pump at Christmas time, which was an average of $2.98; our trip is going to cost roughly $200 more in gasoline alone.

Impact of Rising Gas Prices on Our Standard of Living

While this amount is not as much as I expected for a 6000 mile trip, it still adds up when you take into account the other things that also go up at the same time due to increasing prices for gasoline and diesel. When you are travelling across country you begin to realize how large the country really is and also how many trucks there are on the roads. There are literally thousands of them on the road and you begin to realize that much of the fruits and vegetables we enjoy are carried by these trucks. When the cost of diesel goes up so do the prices of our vegetables, the products we purchase and virtually the cost of everything we consume is affected.

We all take a hit on our standard of living when gas prices increase. If you spend it more of your money on filling up the car, there is less money for other things. If everything is going up, inflation begins to raise it’s ugly head and we all fall further behind when it comes to enjoying the quality of life that we are used to. There really is no choice, you either get a raise or you cut back and guess what we have another recession!

Europe vs. Asia vs. The West – who is winning?

February 21st, 2012 admin Posted in World Powers | No Comments »

Some people might think that this is off the wall, however, please read this post and provide your opinion. Iif you divided the world into three competing super power areas, Who do you think they would be and who do you think would be the most powerful? Would it be the United States or China or an amalgamation of the countries of Europe? Perhaps India and the African countries? Who will win the economic War? Hopefully there will not be a real world war, because then we all lose and mankind would be sent back to the dark ages, so we will ignore this scenario in this post.

If you lumped North and South America together and called them the “West”. You lumped all of the European countries together and called them “Europe”. This includes Russia and the countries that made up the USSR along with some of the Muslim countries. and then you have Asia which encompasses China of course, the Koreas and even Pakistan.  Africa and India and the middle East are a collection of countries that might go one way or the other or even form a forth group. Australia would probably try to adhere to the West initially, but not last long and would succumb to one of the others economically.

I am not talking about war in this post, nor am I talking about domination of one group over an other. What I believe is gradually happening, and it might take 100 years, is that these groups of countries will form into economic alliances with supporting war machines that will dominate their part of the world and will compete with the rest of the world. Right now we are all aiming for open international trade, open skies and all of that stuff, but I believe that is only temporary.

The ABC’s of World Politics

February 7th, 2012 admin Posted in World Politics | No Comments »

I recently saw a post about the world in chaos and I just had to express my opinion about this concept. It seems that the author feels that the world, every continent and major countries are in chaos at the moment and it can be represented by four letters – A,B,C and D!

  • A is for anger
  • B is for borrowing
  • C is for competitiveness
  • D is for deadlock

And I think that this guy who wrote the original post had some real insights here that are worth thinking about. Knowing this information will not solve the problem, but they will help you to understand the big picture of what is going on in the world.  I would add:

  • E is for eager
  • F is for frustration

Let’s talk about each one and explain what they mean to the original writer and to me another writer who puts his own spin on this topic.

Casey Anthony is Back !

January 21st, 2012 admin Posted in Casey Anthony | No Comments »

Surprise, surprise, Casey Anthony has resurfaced via video’s on Youtube! found not guilty a few months ago, she immediately went into hiding after being released from jail. She got credit for time served and did not need to serve any more time for the charges of lying to police which she was found guilty for. I thin we all knew it would only be a matter of time before she emerged again on the news scene to look for attention from the media and the population who followed her case.

Why would Casey be in the Media Spotlight Again? There are various theories as to why she would make these videos and release them. According to her lawyers these are video diaries that she is making to record her thoughts and feelings. They are considered private. Her lawyers say that her account was hacked and the videos were distributed over the internet! This might be true however there are a few questions about this particular theory?

Why for example are the names of some people blanked out from the audio? If this was a hack job, why would the hacker care to protect some people? More than likely they would just release the raw video and leave it at that.

Teen Mom Shoots Intruder and Defends Baby

January 7th, 2012 admin Posted in Self Defense | No Comments »

By now most of us know the story of the teen mom shooting one of two burglars who tried to enter her home on New Years eve with the intention of looking for drugs or perhaps worse, which is what the teen mom, Sarah Dawn McKinley feels would have happened. Apparently both burglars were high on drugs and one at least was carrying a 12 inch hunting knife.  She was on the phone with the dispatcher the entire time while these bums were trying to break into her home over a 20 minute period and the dispatcher heard the shot as the guy is coming in the door!  Can you imagine being in that girls position and the stress she must have been under.

She has a small baby who is sleeping in another room and she is armed with a 12 gauge shot gun! What would you do in this situation?  And were was the father you ask? he passed away on Christmas day from Cancer and was not there to defend his family. In one story we read, the intruder who was shot had been stalking this young teen 2 years ago and then resumed stalking her when her husband passed away. What a low life! There will be no sympathy for him or his partner who by the way has been charged with murder under Oklahoma laws.

People in Power Take Advantage

December 21st, 2011 admin Posted in Penn State | No Comments »

Our last post discussed Penn State and Jerry Sandusky. This one is about a broader subject.  We wanted to discuss why there are so many people who are in a position of power compared to other people who take advantage of the situation in a disgusting manner. Competition is one thing and that is just the way humans are and in fact probably all animals. However why do we as humans descend to the lowest kinds of treatment as we have seen in the past few months?

To name just a few, there is :

  • Penn State and Jerry Sandusky
  • The Syracuse university basketball coach and his wife
  • The Catholic priests
  • Boy scout leaders
  • and many, many more.

Many of these people are smart people, they often are well educated and many are well off. Many even have families with a wife and children and they appear to lead this double life that they must know will eventually catch up to them.
